CHIRP has worked just fine for my Yaesu FT-70D.

I have used chirp with my FT1D and FTM400 and never bricked either of them.
While working on drivers for those 2 radios I have sent settings to the radio that effectively factory reset it but never bricked it. So unless you're changing the source code I think you should be fine with either of those.

I thought I sent this email the other day but must have started writing it and never sent.
Is there any documented cases of Chirp bricking a radio so badly it had to be sent back for a factory restore.
I see so many Yaesu users bring this up that they're afraid to use Chirp because it will break a radio bad enough to void warranty etc. etc...
