One good way I have found to edit CsV files is to use a spreadsheet
program like Microsoft excel or one of the linux free variants. Simply
import as a cSV, do your editing, then export back to a CSV file. Compare
the original to the new edited version to make sure the same number of
commas are in place on the right lines. BTW, I have already tried this on
my windows box using excel and a program specifically designed for the
Baofeng radio. So, it should work the same way with chirp as both that
program and cHIRP should read or write CSV files in the same way.

How did you edit the CSV file?

Did you compare the new CSV file to the original file CSV file using a

The most common cause of trouble is...
- The data format of a cell was changed.
- The number of commas required at the end of a data row was changed.

My guess would be that is because your programming cable has a
Prolific type USB-to-Serial chip.
For Windows you would need to download and install the older Prolific
v3.2.0.0 device driver.
https://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php
For macOS you would have to purchase a 3rd party device driver
(Catalina and earlier. No Big Sur support yet.).
https://www.mac-usb-serial.com/
Linux doesn't need this extra bit of TLC because the device drivers
are open source (and don't come from the Prolific company).

If I'm not mistaken, there was an issue of Microsoft Excel not editing
the csv files correctly and when opening such a file up and saving it
again, it introduced errors.

Such errors did NOT occur with the use of LibreOffice (or OpenOffice)
which is available for Windows, Mac OX-X, and Linux.

OpenOffice download: https://www.openoffice.org/download/
LibreOffice download: https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/
(currently out of order)
LibreOffice download:
http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/libreoffice/stable/7.1.1/

If Microsoft Excel no longer introduces errors, someone please correct me.

Hi Chirp,

Great job you guys are doing there - thanks!

Can you please give me some help - I have a multi-function JiYKR cable
to program my radios, but I can't seem to be able to get in to change or
save any of the settings when I use the 'live' mode on Chirp. Could you
give me some info on how to use the live mode and or suggest any other
versions that I can use to program the IC-2GXET and IC-T7E?

Thanks for your help

Well from the perspective of a screenreader user, I find editing things
much easier to make changes in a spreadsheet program outside of Chirp and
import them after the changes were made, so I would call that, the better
way.

Agreed. If you can, use Libre Office rather than a Microsoft product.
Excel messes with the empty comma seperated fields at the end of each row.

One good way I have found to edit CsV files is to use a spreadsheet program like Microsoft excel or one of the linux free variants. Simply import as a cSV, do your editing, then export back to a CSV file. Compare the original to the new edited version to make sure the same number of commas are in place on the right lines. BTW, I have already tried this on my windows box using excel and a program specifically designed for the Baofeng radio. So, it should work the same way with chirp as both that program and cHIRP should read or write CSV files in the same way.

How did you edit the CSV file?
What did you change?
Did you compare the new CSV file to the original file CSV file using a
text editor?
Attach both the before and after CSV files to this conversation so
that they can be reviewed.
The most common cause of trouble is...
- The data format of a cell was changed.
- The number of commas required at the end of a data row was changed.

My guess would be that is because your programming cable has a
Prolific type USB-to-Serial chip.
For Windows you would need to download and install the older Prolific
v3.2.0.0 device driver.
https://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php
For macOS you would have to purchase a 3rd party device driver
(Catalina and earlier. No Big Sur support yet.).
https://www.mac-usb-serial.com/
Linux doesn't need this extra bit of TLC because the device drivers
are open source (and don't come from the Prolific company).

If I'm not mistaken, there was an issue of Microsoft Excel not editing
the csv files correctly and when opening such a file up and saving it
       again, it introduced errors.
Such errors did NOT occur with the use of LibreOffice (or OpenOffice)
which is available for Windows, Mac OX-X, and Linux.
       OpenOffice download: https://www.openoffice.org/download/
       LibreOffice download: https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/
       (currently out of order)
       LibreOffice download:
       http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/libreoffice/stable/7.1.1/
If Microsoft Excel no longer introduces errors, someone please correct me.

Well from the perspective of a screenreader user, I find editing things much easier to make changes in a spreadsheet program outside of Chirp and import them after the changes were made, so I would call that, the better way.

How did you edit the CSV file?
           What did you change?
Did you compare the new CSV file to the original file CSV file using a
           text editor?
Attach both the before and after CSV files to this conversation so

Agreed. If you can, use Libre Office rather than a Microsoft product. Excel messes with the empty comma seperated fields at the end of each row.

Well from the perspective of a screenreader user, I find editing things much easier to make changes in a spreadsheet program outside of Chirp and import them after the changes were made, so I would call that, the better way.

Hi,
I have an old (ancient) Kenwood TM-V7A that I've programmed in the past
with a long-dead WinXP laptop. The Kenwood had the chronic screen failure
years ago that I had a weird hair to fix, and did with success! Now I want
to update the programming. I found a functioning XP laptop and I've jumped
through 10k hoops getting my modern Yaesu/ Prolific USB cable to talk to
WInXP, but I got that to work finally (with a deeply buried legacy
driver)... now I'm trying to install CHIRP on on the XP laptop so I can
import my current .csv file and put it on the Kenwood. I get: "This
application has failed to start because the application configuration is
incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem" (it doesn't).
I think a legacy version (2004'ish?) of CHIRP might be the thing, but I
don't know where to find it on the CHIRP website.

Conversely, I have the ancient Kenwood MCP_V7 software successfully
installed on the XP, but it doesn't seem to import anything at all. Not
sure the point of software that only reads the radio without the ability to
import data to upload, but whatever. If anyone knows how to get a .csv
file into that it would get the job done just as well.

Cheers,
JP. KF7QJY

Hi JP, I don't know if this would help but the current version of CHIRP
supports the Kewood TM V7. It might be worth trying to see if your
programming cable will work with it. Just a thought.....John
