Well, I got it working by reading the instructions on the CHIRP web site. It suggested downloading a driver from the 409shop.com web site, which I did. Amazingly, the cheap (about $4 including shipping) worked!

I am new to this list and probably am making mistakes that are already well known!
I bought a cheap cable running the 2303 chip, which I found later is not so good.
The drivers on the supplied CD seem to work OK, but when I go to use CHIRP, I get an "Error Occurred" message saying "could not open port COM3: [Error 2] The system cannot find the file specified."
Is there anything I can try here, or should I just shop for a better cable?
Richard
