Tony, You say your screen goes Black. If you have a UV5R series with the inverted Black/White display, check the setting for MENU 31. If you have it set to OFF, your display will go dark.
The CHIRP setting would be: Settings / Basic Settings / TX LED Color It may be set to OFF.

I have a similar issue with my radio. My screen goes black when I key up. But unlike yours, I can keep transmitting. I don't know what's up with it.
