Doug, Those steps look perfect. Yes. Empty is what I want. This will let me determine what the default values are for your firmware version. I will compare them to earlier firmware versions to see if any have been changed.
Once again, thanks in advance. Jim

I'm a newbie at this... Just got the 5r+ and just passed my Technician's Exam, so let's make sure what you'd like me to do.
- Using Chirp I'll do a Save of my current channel/freq assignments to an
.img file. 2. Do the 5R+ Menu 40 Reset. All assignments will be erased. 3. Using Chirp, I'll do a Save of the empty channel/freqs to a new .img file. 4. Email you the Step 3 .img file. 5. Restore the Step 1 .img file to the 5R+
Question: If the Step 3 file has empty channel/freqs, will this help you?? Thanks.

Doug,
Yep. Thanks for being so detailed with your initial post. It made it easy to diagnose the issue.
The way I see it, the folks at Baofeng, with the last few releases, has been putting the firmware version in the wrong line of the 3+Power-on message.
The format used to be like this " Ver " "BFB297 "
Then when BFB299 came out they looked like this "BFB299 " "BFB297 " The " Ver " was overwritten and the previous "BFB297 " survived. To me this appears to be an accidental mistake on Baofeng's part. CHIRP was updated to deal with this change a few days before v0.3.0 stable was released.
And now you have "BFB301 " "BFB297 "
Would you do me a favor? First, save your settings to a file so that they can be restored. Then perform a menu 40 reset on your UV-5R. After the reset, download from your UV-5R and save the data to an .img file with a different name than what you used before (ResetFileFromDougForJim.img or similar) and email it to me ( uv5r@kc9hi.net ). Then you can restore you settings using the file that you save earlier.
Thanks in advance.
Jim

Jim,****
That did it – With that CHIRP 0.3.0 version, I am able to Upload/Download my UV-5R+ channels.****
The other link I used was the one contained on http://miklor-uv5r.99k.org/UV5R-CHIRP.html and was the one recommended. Someone might want to correct that link for other UV-5R+ owners. It will save them mucho trouble and discouragement.****
After looking at both VIP and CHIRP, I’d rather use CHIRP – it’s much more complete and seems to work better.****
Thanks for the assist… 73’s****
