ok, so I just found out about CHIRP, and I just joined the list, but my question is how do I install it in Ubuntu?
Actually, Steve is working on getting a nice deb package for it as we speak. So, you may want to avoid installing it on your system just yet in hopes that that will be available soon.
In the meantime, you ca easily run it directly from source. Grab the .tar.gz file, extract it, go into the directory and run the "chirpw" file within. Let me know if you have trouble.
