Thanks Neil. I've just been looking at the links from John, and yeah, getting a sense that there's lots more going on there.
In terms of being able to just talk to the radio though, are they different? Basically wondering if software could read the whole works, update the bits it does understand, and then put it all back.
The openspot devices look interesting too, thanks.

dmr is more complex to program than a 1 dimension memory layout of analog radios. theres talkgroups, colours, zones, contacts etc and they have to be then stitched together by the software. a sharkrf openspot may be usefull to you if no local repeaters. recommended. i got 2 😊
otherwise, chirp is the best app for me on my other fleet of radios, works great.

Do you know if that's a technical limitation, or just means that there hasn't been anyone trying to work with this model yet? Are the protocols used to talk to the radios documented anywhere? Could always look at the source I suppose. <grin>
For what it's worth, it turns out I don't have a digital repeater in my area yet anyway, but will be looking to set up for regular analog use.

The digital version of the Baofeng is not supported by CHIRP.

Hello all,
Call me new to everything - brand new ham (VA7TJL), new Chirp
user,
and have a new radio. I've read docs, but please let me know
if the
questions are too dumb.
I've picked up a Baofeng DM-5R, V3 as seen here:
https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fleetw...
It shows up as BF-5R on the boot screen, but neither that nor
DM-5R
are listed as supported. I did see though that there are other     Baofeng radios under new and unusual names, that might be
supported
as a variant of one that is known. If there is a way to tell
if this
is the case, I'm open to suggestions.
The Windows software from the manufacturer does detect and
read the
config from the radio, but the USB device (radio with supplied     cable) shows up in settings Win 10 settings as, "MCU MOUSE DEMO",     under the "Bluetooth and other Devices" section. When I try to
read
from the radio in Chirp, there is nothing shown under Ports in the     drop down. I can select Baofeng as the vendor, and a number of
other
models are listed. Similarly, under Linux (current x64 Mint, based     on Ubuntu)     , there is no known port that the software is looking for.
Ideas?
Cheers, Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Tim
