I have used this cable for some time and it has worked well with my windows pc setup, which I haven already gotten rid of.
A. Plug in cable to Mac and radio B. Put radio in clone mode (hold v/m and power on, select clone, push set, radio restarts in clone mode) C. Start up chirp, click ok box on debug mode D. Select radio clone E. select the select the 'usbserial' device from the list F. Select radio type yaesu/ft8800 G. Push ok in chirp, chirp is now waiting for input from radio H. Push transmit button on yaesu (v/m, radio shows transmitting)
About one second goes by then I get error on radio and error reported in chirp.

ok, I installed the chirp-daily-10312011 and had exactly the same error. I do have a vx-7 but do not have the cable yet to test that one.
Have you used your USB-serial adapter for anything else? What device name are you putting into the clone box?
I assume you're following the "Note for Yaesu radios" bits of these procedures:

Specifically about making sure the computer is waiting for the radio before hitting the button to fire off the clone from the radio side?
