My linux is a little foggy. I do sort of remember needing to
use launch_dbus instead of exec from a shell. But from reading
here I though there was a way to fetch Chirp from a repository
using "wget" command line repository installer.
And you would need to have the correct repository in your database.
It may be you juast didn't install it properly.

follows:
Changes for Build #265
[Marco Filippi <
iz3gme.marco@gmail.com>] [tm281] Add basic support
Kenwood TM281 was in supported radio
list but even though is a clone of TM271
it answer with a different model id
Implement #1443
[Jens Jensen <
kd4tjx@yahoo.com>] [vx-3] fix exception when importing into empty memories #1445
Introduced bug in earlier patch where channel struct field unknown7
was split into two subfields, unknown7a and unknown7b. This should fix.
[Jens Jensen <
kd4tjx@yahoo.com>] fix bad cable errors for some users on upload #1397
some users are seeing bad cable errors on upload, which may be related to
changes made in #1187

ft-90 will use this optional behavior to open the port before showing prompt.

Michael,
Here's what I do in Linux Mint (based on and compatible with Ubuntu)
In the terminal execute the following
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:dansmith/chirp-snapshots
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install chirp-daily
Then still in terminal add your user to the "dialout" group
(substitute
your Ubuntu username for {username})
sudo usermod -a -G dialout {username}
Then logout and login for the group membership change to take effect.
