I would also recommend looking at "Free Serial Port Monitor"
It's like eltima serial port monitor but free.

I have used it a few times to gather what I needed. (no idea if it works on anything but xp-32)

I've never done it, but I understand that you can run portmon in a Windows virtual machine using vritualbox or something similar.
