Thanks for that advice. I had started to think that I was going to try that as I'd seen a number of photos of the CP2102 with the RX and TX pins jumpered together and I read this PDF file too.

Yes you need a ground reference connection. Join the Data TX and RX together onto the data pin and it works.

I made my own cable for the VX-5 and it works.

This seems to be similar to the Baofeng UV-3R (as shown on the Miklor
page) but is a Ground connection required?

It seems like VX-7R uses one pin for data and it is bidirectional. If that is the case then you should add some more components to convert bidirectional single pin to standard RX/TX serial connection.
