I used chirp this morning to transfer configuration and memory files from mine to a friend's BaoFeng UV-5R. Haven’t used Chirp in 2 years; it worked perfectly the first time. I very much appreciate the efforts of Chirp volunteers in creating and maintaining this fine program. I am sorry that I don’t have anything to complain about, must not be looking at the situation with sufficient rigor. :) K6PUK, yeah, that really is my call sign, a practical joke by someone at the FCC in 1955.

I have a Yaesu 857 and I have the Prolific USB to Serial comm port cable. I have installed the old driver. It did work with old versions of Chirp. Now it's now working. Any ideas would be appreciated. 73 Mike K.

[chirp_users] Why Isn't Chirp In The Main Repository Of Linux Distros?

Hi, I've added the DanSmith repository enough times now that I can do it without looking for the exact syntax. But I keep wondering why Chirp is not in all Linux stable repositories. I mean that if I want something like speech-dispatcher, I don't need to add a repository to get it. As popular as Chirp is, can't it just be in all Linux repositories? Thanks for any info, I have been web searching for an explanation as to why this is in general, but I have only gotten a history of repositories without really explaining an answer to my question. Hi. Being stuck in the Python2.x world, rather than moving to Python3.x is one reason. Python2.x has been "End Of Life'd" so most (if not all) distro's are not including it by default. (That EoL notice was made several years ago!) Though, there is nothing to stop you from installing Python2.7 for example (you may have some dependencies to work through though) then install Chirp. 73. Dave G8KBV. (Linux Mint 19.3 in use here.) [chirp_users] UV-3R Troubleshooting

I just purchased some Baofeng UV-3R radios and am unable to connect to them with chirp using OSX, so looking for some help with troubleshooting. The error I get is the classic "Radio did not ACK first command". I have chirp working just fine with other chinese radios including BF-F8HP, BF-T1 and UV-9R. The BF-F8HP / UV-5R cable I have, and the UV-3R cable both appear to use the same Prolific chipset (the BF-T1 and UV-9R cables show up differently)... Under System Information / Hardware / USB: *BFF8-HP / UV-5R cable (two-pin)* USB-Serial Controller: Product ID: 0x2303 Vendor ID: 0x067b (Prolific Technology, Inc.) Version: 3.00 Speed: Up to 12 Mb/s Manufacturer: Prolific Technology Inc. Location ID: 0x14100000 / 9 Current Available (mA): 500 Current Required (mA): 100 Extra Operating Current (mA): 0 *UV-3R cable (single pin)* USB-Serial Controller: Product ID: 0x2303 Vendor ID: 0x067b (Prolific Technology, Inc.) But to my mind, given the chipset appears to be the same and I have the BF-F8HP cable working, I would have thought that the UV-3R cable would work as well? Any ideas for how else to troubleshoot this? Is there anything that's worth trying before I give up and order a different cable? (If not, recommendations for a reliable source for a cable for the UV-3R would be welcome.) Thanks, Matthew
