It seems that though I can makes changes when I have unchecked Smart Tone Mode, CHIRP still either does not save what I see on the screen, or it corrupts the file that I saved when it reads it the next time. I consider a file corrupted when some of it is changed by a program, and I did not want that change. It seems in consistent to permit the changes and saves, then change the data the next time the file is read. ~R~

There are some times when I want to use PL tones w simplex. I live in an area where there are spurious signals that open the squelch, and I want to use PL tones to limit that. (For example, I support a summer program where HS students design, build, launch and recover in instrument package. The balloon goes to 100,000+ feet. We must chase the instrument package, and coordinate with one another as we do.) I changed the I changed the tone mode to (None) and set the PL tone to the one I desired. When I need the PL tone, all I need do is enable Tone and ToneSql, and the PL tones are already set. After I hit refresh, the PL tones changed to 88.5. I can see that someone has decided that 88.5 is the "default" for (None), and I see why the program might change it. BUT I don't want it changed. I want my own defaults. I can get this on my Icom, and I imagine that the Baofeng will also handle this. I don't know. Maybe the Baofeng is more limited. I am just learning it...the book, as we all know, is dismally short on explanations. If this is not clear, please ask for more details and I'd provide. With Smart Tone Mode disabled... 1. Set Tone Mode to (None) 2. Change the Tone and ToneSql to, say, 91.5. 3. Click on a different channel. 4. Hit refresh. On my system, it changes back. Just leave it alone... OTOH, you said "the tone field is a combination of multiple Chirp fields (Tone Mode +...". Good morning...er, I guess that it is now after noon here... I see now that I forgot to intro my "new" radios. I have just joined a group that is using the Baofeng UV-5RTP for the group radio, to simplify group support. Unfortunately, it seems that tech skills are not high in this group...they are looking for someone to help with programming the radios. I want to come up speed on the radios and CHIRP (as well as VIP, I suppose, though I don't know yet what it does). Not only will I be a help to the group, but I can then educate them. Knowledge is power ;-) I have many years of experience with ham and programming radios, though by no means consider myself an expert. The Baofeng radios seem pretty good, and the value for the price makes it a good group radio. Thanks to Tom's hint, I discovered what Jim later confirmed, and that is that though I had View > Hide Unused Fields checked, I had to toggle it off and on to see the effect. That effect /did/ makes some things more clear. While I was visiting the View menu, I saw Smart Tone Modes, and imagining myself smarter than a computer program, I cheekily checked that off, too. //That// stopped CHIRP from messing with my edits, and I may well find that it will make the other mysterious effects vanish, too. I am now able to edit the fields and have them "stick". I appreciated comments from Jock KC6IIH. I do, however, know about simplex and repeater ops (kindly meant here, Jock...I thank you for taking the time to reply, as you do not know my knowledge level). I was specifically addressing the (to me) mysterious behaviour that I saw. Changing [this] made [that] change, and though I could see some thought behind it, I want a program that will do what I want. If I stick a value in a field, whether someone else would choose the same value or not, I want it to stay. It will be a day or so before I get another chance to program and test the UV-5RTP. OK. I get it. I can have any Cross Mode I want, as long as it is Tone>Tone, even if I'm not using a cross mode. And I can have any default PL code I want, as long as it is 88.5. I still have not been able to get Tone Mode (none) for my simplex channels... I looked on many web pages on the CHIRP site for some clues to the design intent and how to use the program, but so far I don't see how... ~R~

I have been unable to program my Icom IC-2100H with Chirp. I am using the recommended FTDI cable for that radio. The time frame in which to trigger the Icom versus Chirp is very short. Can someone provide a step-by-step method to program it?

I have a UV-82C and I can only select either 1Watt or 5Watt output using CHIRP or the factory programming software. Is there some way using CHIRP (or other means) to select 2Watts for MURS or 500mW for FRS frequencies 8 through 14? I'm pretty sure the answer will be "no" because I know the power output selection is embedded in the firmware in the radio. Is there an antenna that will reduce the power output without damaging the radio? Thank you for any information on this subject,Dan

I am new to this user forum and not to sure about search the complete discussion. That being said, I do not know if this has been discussed. I am a Canadian resident and the Federal Communications has not regulated portable radios to narrow band. All of the Motorola radios that we have are wide band. I had purchased some radios in the US and had them programed. They were setup as narrow band. Apparently, they did not work with our existing radios so they were reprogrammed as wide band here in Canada. Now the question: When adding a new channel, which column needs to be changed and how to program some frequencies as wide band? Thanks in advance. [chirp_users] importing updated file

I have updated my data file in a spread sheet and chirp requires me to have a frequency listed etc. What I want to do is leave these deleted lines in the file for future additions with out reorganizing the whole file. Can anyone help me out? Thanks, Ken KM4KKM/KS4ST

[chirp_users] BaoFeng UV-82C Problems

Recently I purchased a new BaoFeng UV-82C from Amazon. When I try to load the UV-82C from Chirp, the only selection I get is UV-82. There is no UV-82C in the list. I looked at the Chirp Website and the UV-82C is clearly listed by itself. All the other UV-82 and variants were listed in a separate section. I am using the current version of Chirp, 2016-04-19. The box I received clearly said UV-82C, but on the back of the radio where the battery goes it said UV-82. Is this nomal? Shouldn't the radio say UV-82C? There was a sticker that said it complied with Part 90 of the FCC Rules. Above that it has FCC-ID:ZP5BF-82. In Chirp when I go to SETTINGS, OTHER SETTINGS, I get the following: Firmware Message 1: Ver Firmware Message 2: US2S25 6+Power-On Message 1: 160218N 6+Power-On Message 2: B820001 I don't see UV-82C anywhere in Chirp or the original BaoFeng programming software or on the radio itself. I copied and pasted the list from the Chirp website showing the UV-82C is in a class by itself, but does not show up when I load Chirp to read from the radio. Could I have received a UV-82 by mistake instead of a UV-82C? Any help or clarification on this issue is greatly appreciated.
