[chirp_users] Chirp on BeagleBone Black

My new Rev C BeagleBone Black arrived today and I decided to see if it would run Chirp successfully. Short answer: yes it does :) The Rev C version comes with 4 GB of onboard flash and comes preinstalled with Debian 7.4 with an LXDE desktop. The older versions came with Angstrom Linux and only had 2 GB onboard storage. You could use one of those by loading Debian or Ubuntu on a 4GB or larger micro SD card and booting from there. The default user is debian and will sudo with no password, so it's not the most secure setup, but that is easily changed if you like. Here is how I did it: Open up LXterm from the Accessories menu and type: sudo usermod -a -G dialout debian This adds the debian user to the dialout group so you have access to the USB ports. Then I cheated a bit: While in LXterm I did this: sudo apt-get install chirp. This installs a truly ancient version of Chirp, but takes care of all the dependencies for you. When it completes, type: apt-get remove chirp. That removes the old version of chirp but leaves the dependencies. Then download the latest version of Chirp (the tar.gz Linux source version) From LXterm, type: cd /home/debian/Downloads and hit enter. Then type: tar -zxvf chirp* (no sudo needed here) This will extract the tar.gz file into a directory under Downloads, chirp-0.4.0 in my case. Then from the file manager in the GUI, navigate to that directory and double click on chirpw and click on execute in the dialog that pops up. I'm not sure if there is a practical use for running it in the BeagleBone, but it works every bit as well as my "real" Linux box does and reads/writes just fine to all my radios, it's fun, and Linux has no issues with the counterfeit Prolific USB programming cables. [chirp_users] Chirp and UV-82

I am new to amateur radio and have a new Beofeng UV-82. I have gone through all the usual cable problems and managed to make communication with the radio. My problem is that when I make changes to Chirp it will not save them either to the radio or to file. I reverts to some default setting changing all new entries except the freq. I am editing the entries by selecting the line then right clicking to enter the edit mode This is very aggravating! Help!

[chirp_users] CHIRP cannot see serial interface on Apple 10.9.3 Maverics even though the Mac does see it

Can anyone offer any advice? I'm trying to use CHIRP to program a TYT UV-F! with a MacBook Air running Mavericks. I did use a Windows machine (once) to program the UV-F! so I know the Prolific cable works with the radio and one model of PC. CHIRP 0.4.0 only shows four cu.drivers in the "Download from Radio" menu and none of them are reasonable; two are bluetooth and two wireless. The CHIRP menu does offer TYT and UV-F1 as choices so that looks good. Mavericks directory /dev listing shows the four cu.driver files and lots of other file names but nothing like "ftdi" or "serial" even after disabling the Apple ftdi.kext and installing the recommended FTDI serial driver with no errors. The Apple system info shows the cable present: USB-Serial Controller: Product ID: 0x2303 Vendor ID: 0x067b (Prolific Technology, Inc.) Version: 3.00 Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec Manufacturer: Prolific Technology Inc. Location ID: 0x04100000 / 3 Current Available (mA): 500 This could be as simple as me not knowing to hold down some button on the radio when starting the CHIRP program or missing some file in some directory. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'd like to use CHIRP to manage several radios but I can't even make one work at this point. Ashley Grayson

I asked a while back, but got no response. Since there has been a bit of a conversation about transmitting, I thought I would ask again…. Using CHIRP (latest stable or daily) I find that I can specify odd splits (not just +/- .6), but the software doesn’t seem to save them correctly. Anyone notice this besides me? If I set it up in CHIRP, it will hold long enough to program the radio, but it reverts to some odd mixture of either + or - in that column if I try to save and reload the spreadsheet. I have to reset the correct transmit freq every time I use it. I’m famous for oddball issues, so if this affects no one else, I’ll just live with it, but I would call it a bug worth noting to the software developer(s). BTW, I’m using the Mac version, but I don’t think it matters. Seems like I had the same issue when I tried a Win version. TIA, Forrest

[chirp_users] Disable Transmission on UV-82

Totally green, new user here trying to set up a Baofeng UV-82 to receive only on one UHF channel. I've had no problem using CHIRP to set up the radio and use it normally but cannot figure out how to disable the transmit function. I have unchecked the VHF and UHF Tx Enabled check boxes but that didn't stop transmission. Any hints would be much appreciated. Rohm Thompson

[chirp_users] Should I Get a New Build for Any Reason?

I have a way old build (Feb 2012) that I use mostly for my Baofeng UV5R and a little bit for a Wouxon...it seems to work fine for what I need to do with it, but has anything significant been added for the UV5R or in general that is a reason to update? What I am afraid of is that I have it working fine now, and somehow every time I try to update just about anything, something gets messed up and it no longer works at all! I have never updated CHIRP, so I don't know what issues if any I might encounter. Thanks! Pat Anderson KD7OAC
