Can we do a Baofeng auto-detect mode, like we do with Kenwood and Icom? An error message like "unsupported firmware version:NR-323F8HP-1" hints to me that we could provide some programatic path to the appropriate driver.

Probably. I looked once to try to see if I could figure out how that worked, but I never looked close enough to understand it actually works.
