The problem was that the program needed to be Root to read the serial port. Problem solved.

No, user must be member of dialout group to be able to access serial port devices:
marco@somewhere:~$ ls -l /dev/ttyS0 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 64 ott 17 08:28 /dev/ttyS0
I strongly suggest you to use root user only for administrative task.

It may be naïve of me but I think it would be useful to someone starting out on helping with the code if there was a brief description of the logic flow through the various modules of code with a short description of the modules operations.
